Dating a twin

My first love was an identical twin. We were all in high school, and they were a year ahead of me. The boy I loved was known as the 'friendly' one, and his brother was the 'cool' one. We dated for fifteen months, and it was a very memorable experience. Dating a twin often involves a whole additional set of complications besides the ones that you usually face in a relationship.

The first thing people usually wonder about those involved in a relationship with an identical twin is this: Do you feel attracted to the brother/sister? The answer for me is no. In my situation, I fell in love with 'Jake' first when he was a year ahead of me in middle school. It was one of those crazy, chemical attractions, I would turn red if he was in the same room. He moved onto high school and I forgot about him until I, too, moved up to high school, and we were in a class together. (I was in a lot of advanced math/language classes). The same strong attraction sprang up as if no time had elapsed. He acted on it, this time around, and within a couple of weeks we were inseparable. I never had a class with his brother, Aaron, but I was around both of them much of the time, as they hung out together with two or three other boys at lunchtime. Before Jake and I were officially dating, Aaron, who knew of me and seemed to grudge his brother any feminine attention as he was usually the object of affection, came up behind me at my locker, picked me up and swung me in a circle. I got angry, and demanded to be put down. When he did so I glared hard, and stalked off in a huff. Aaron was wearing his brother's jacket, and my best friend saw it all happen. She was amazed, and said, "You just got mad at Jake." I denied it, and assured her that it was Aaron and not Jake who had picked me up. But she was certain that Jake had just received my cold shoulder, so certain in fact, that I began to worry this was so. I had suffered no such doubts in the midst of the situation, my reaction was instantaneous: I did not want to be man-handled by Aaron, and I knew it was him. I finally asked Jake about this, and he confirmed that it was Aaron and not him who had picked me up.

To my mind, this is all the proof required that even identical twins are completely different people, and not interchangeable on any level. A relationship developing between Aaron and I was never an issue, but there were other factors that made dating a twin difficult.

For one, Aaron and Jake had always been as close as could be. Though Aaron
