A True Man

Some people wonder what the difference is between men and boys. When do boys become men? When they get a job? When they start dressing in khaki shorts, polo shirts and loafers for the Saturday family shopping? When golf and board meetings take precedence over drinking and tinkering on cars? When they opt for a smooth Scotch or Brandy over the mass produced, extensive quantities of the latest domestic brew? When trips to Disney become paid vacation time rather than a week off from the restaurant celebrating Spring Break in Mexico?

To some of the above, I concede. There are true "men" who possess the above qualities. But there are other true men out there. Men that may not have the long board titles or partake of the lavish libations. To me, and I believe that I speak for all women, a true man is someone who realizes the importance of the people in his life, not the things in his life.

A true man loves his wife. Loves her through his very soul, pouring out into every aspect of his life. He craves her, respects her, and loves her despite her faults. He barrels past the misconceptions of marriage and values it for what it truly is-a covenant between a man and his God to shelter her under his wing and allow her to truly prosper in every way.

A true man loves his children. Embraces them without shame, gets involved on a daily basis, in the seemingly minuscule details that children really remember as they get older.
A true man realizes that the work, the money, the recognition by friends and peers is simply trifling filler without a family unit to share it with.

A true man tries. A true man does not give up at the first sign of adversity. Whether it be business, relationships, children or pleasure. A true man keeps his cool, stealthily proceeding through the muck, free of lament and pompous superiority.

A true man lives. Truly lives. For others, not for himself. A true man dies with honor rather than references. A true man's greatness is not fully understood until his departure.
