The loss of your employment is one of the biggest crisis you will face during your lifetime. The financial loss is enough to destroy everything you have spent years building if you don’t deal with it correctly. Follow the recommended processes of developing an excellent resume and applying at the major places you would prefer to work. Keep your network alive so you will be on top of the situation should a position become available.
Suddenly having so much time on your hands gives you an opportunity to pursue other interests. Now you finally have time to update your home whether its painting, wall papering, or building shelves, cabinets or even adding a room. Yes, but money is limited. Don’t let that stand in your way. Take a job at a home improvement store even if it is a lot less money than you are accustomed to earning. The benefits in discounts will more than make up for the low salary. Having a project to keep yourself busy during the time you are away from your normal career will keep your mind busy, give you feeling of self worth and add value to your home.
Take on a new direction in your job search. If what you want in a position is not available then look toward something you would like to learn about. You’ll never know whether you like a different type of job unless you get out there and try it. Take a chance, be brave, be an adventurer. Take that low paying job and see where it leads.
I can’t stress enough that finding a job is easier if you already have a job. It’s all about networking. The best employers are out in the field recruiting for their own companies.
They want to steal good employees that they see in action. One day while your cutting carpet for a customer, he sees what a fantastic conscientious employee you are and starts talking to you. The two of you hit it off immediately. Through conversation you learn he is the owner of one of the companies you have been pursuing. Right there you manage to get your foot in the door. Your determination and ability pay off by allowing your future employer to see you in action rather than depending on a piece of paper, your resume, to land the job for you.
The networking you are doing during your normal daily activities will help eliminate a lengthy dependency on unemployment. Live within your means if it is possible and try to keep your spending at a minimum. Clean out the garage and have a yard sale. It is another great place to network.
You were and still are a valuable employee no matter what career path you have followed. Focus, prepare and get the exposure you need to lead you to your future career.
