Side effects of Mirtazapine

by Jennifer Kirkman

Created on: July 19, 2010

Mirtazapine is a drug which may be prescribed in order to treat problems with depression, and therefore classified as an antidepressant. This drug will help the depressed individual to have a better mood, increase how alert they feel and therefore, the person can go on and live life with their normal activities where they can't when depressed. Mirtazapine has also been known to help people that have Parkinson's Disease.

There are many precautions which doctors must take before they prescribe Mirtazapine for their patients, so knowing the history is therefore important which means all medical conditions the person has, and all medications and supplements taken. If you are taking any of the MAOI drugs at all, then your doctor will need to remove you from these for at least two weeks before starting you on therapy with Mirtazapine. Combining Mirtazapine with any MAOI drug is a great danger.

Many people will sometimes have suicidal thoughts when they begin therapy with Mirtazapine. This is true with a lot of the antidepressant medications. Sometimes antidepressant drugs will actually worsen your depression symptoms instead of correcting them as they should. If this is happening to you while taking Mirtazapine, then you need to let your doctor know right away. Mirtazapine will also not instantly clear up your depression symptoms as some people believe it will. You need to give any antidepressant drug at least one month to begin noticing positive mood changes.

People that have manic depression, kidney or liver disease, seizure problems, heart disease or past heart attack, may be unable to take Mirtazapine safely. The doctor will need to determine if you can still take Mirtazapine under these circumstances with these medical problems by taking some special tests.

You need to take Miratazapine just as directed on your medicine label. The starting dose is usually 75 milligrams daily and increased as needed up to 225 milligrams daily. Mirtazapine should be taken with a full glass of water each time taken.

Mirtazapine may cause you to have some serious side effects. Feeling faint, oral thrush, and a general unwell feeling of having the flu sometimes can occur with taking Mirtazapine. Weight gain has been reported, vertigo, abdominal pains, and hunger have also been reported in some people. In rare instances, Mirtazapine may cause an allergic type of reaction in some people which includes hives, facial and tongue swelling, and also trouble breathing. These are emergency symptoms which calls for immediate treatment.
