What to do when things don't go as planned

Everyone knows that life rarely goes as planned. Although, we try to cover all the bases, unexpected happenings can have a serious effect on the best laid plans. When things don’t go as planned due to unforeseen circumstances, it may seem as if all is lost, but it is possible to embrace the changes for a positive outcome.

Don’t Panic

Whatever you do-do not freak out! Unpredicted disasters can cause emotional strain to you and those in your presence.  So if you're close to a meltdown the best thing to do is remove yourself from the situation (even if just for a few minutes). This will allow you the opportunity to calm down, which will enable you to focus on possible solutions to the problem. Discuss the situation with other people involved and accept the possibility that you are not perfect and that it is more than okay to ask for and receive help from those you love and trust.  If you are a lone victim to circumstance, poise yourself and utilize every ounce of resourcefulness necessary to finesse your way out of the situation.  Resilience is the key to survival in any situation.

Plan B

Make sure you have an alternate plan or Plan B.  Realize and acknowledge that things happen that are beyond your control, and have an alternate course of action in place…just in case.  Also, keep in mind that sometimes when faced with disaster, it is possible that what you end up with is better than you initially had planned. These are the times when great memories and future stories are formed. Truthfully, circumstantial delays are rarely good.  When planning outdoor festivities, make sure there is an alternate shelter reserved, should the weather take a turn for the worse.  Vacations are another disaster waiting to happen.  The car you’re driving can break down, flights and hotels can be cancelled or delayed or you can succumb to illness.  Emergency funds and insurance are a must for every situation because, let’s face it, nothing is free.  Having extra money set aside can help alleviate the stress when faced with disaster and will help you ease into new arrangements.

Embrace the Good in a Situation

Perhaps it is too late for a Plan B or there is not an immediate remedy for the situation. This doesn’t mean the end of the world. Look for the silver lining and focus on that. Do as much damage control as possible, remain positive, and move on.  Clinging to the negative, in any situation, makes it impossible to salvage anything positive.

Do not become a victim to circumstance. When things don’t go as planned, do whatever is necessary to maintain your sanity and resolve the situation as best you can. It may not turn out to be the perfect scenario you had envisioned, but at least you will know that you tried your best to repair the situation.
