Road travel food on a budget

by Tom Geoffroy

Created on: July 18, 2010

Enjoy the freedom of the open road without busting your budget when traveling. One area to save on your travel budget is food. Eating on the go does not have to be mundane or expensive. There is not much you can do about the fixed price of fuel for your car, but you have many choices when it comes to fuel for your body. With a little planning and an open mind, you will appreciate the savings and better enjoy your trip by considering these helpful hints.

♦  Don’t take the kitchen sink:

Many people try to save money on food costs when traveling by packing all the food they think they need before they leave. This cuts down on available space for luggage and leaves little room to stretch your body and move around in the vehicle. Bring a cooler with some drinks and enough food for one day. If you pack more than that your food could spoil or get stale and you may not even be in the mood for what you packed when it is time to eat.

♦  Fruits, nuts, and veggies:

When traveling long stretches of interstate highway, boredom may set in. The first thing we do when bored is reach for something to eat. Pack fresh fruits, nuts and veggies to satisfy those urges to eat. You will stay healthy and full enough so when it is time for a regular meal you will not feel the need to stuff yourself. These snacks can be purchased at any super market along the way.

♦  Eat breakfast:

Eating breakfast is very important for healthy living. Yogurt, cereal, banana, and a cup of coffee can help you start your day for just under $3.00. You will stay alert on the road and not crave a huge meal for lunch. Your cooler will store everything but your coffee. When getting gas for your car, pick up a cup of coffee too. While in the connivance store at the station you can also take advantage of the free packages of condiments for your sandwiches at lunch time. No need to pack bottles of mayo, ketchup, relish or mustard. Save time, save room, and save money.

♦  Shop along the way:

As stated before, you don’t want to pack the kitchen sink. Stop along the way at a supermarket to pick up fresh food to eat on the road. You will enjoy the ability to stretch your legs, purchase local produce, and save big on food you can prepare yourself. It is always interesting to see the various foods available and popular in different parts of the country. Let this be part of your traveling experience. Take advantage of road side stands selling locally grown produce. Your pallet will be pleased as your wallet is eased.

♦  Treat yourself:

Road trips are great fun and should be enjoyed. Now that you have saved money on your food budget it is time to treat yourself to a memorable night out and a nice meal. Many large chain restaurants offer discounts and two for one gift cards. You can eat out and enjoy the personal service from a wait staff of a fine establishment without busting the bank. Relax knowing you have room in your budget to pamper yourself and savor the day.

♦  Conclusion:

Travel can be expensive but it does not have to be. When you prepare for your next trip on the road, consider some of the tips offered here and take advantage of some nice savings without sacrificing any of the joy and excitement.
