Canine acne: Causes and treatments in dogs

Created on: July 18, 2010

Acne can be a problem for pets, particularly dogs. Although it is more common in adolescent animals, it can occur in dogs of any age.

-Symptoms-

Small bumps appear on the dog. These may be only on their face (chin most often) or on their back as well.

Pets can have white heads, black heads, or red bumps. These contain puss which can be expressed by squeezing.

Dogs may appear to be itchy, rubbing their face on the carpet or other surfaces.

The pet will otherwise appear healthy. If the pet has other symptoms it is important to seek veterinary attention.

-Causes-

Acne in dogs is more common in pups that are 5 months – 1 year. In these cases the cause is often the result of changing hormones, and although unsightly are nothing to be overly concerned with.

Some dog breeds are more prone to acne. The short haired breeds in particular, such as Pit Bulls, and Basenjis often have skin problems such as canine acne.

Diet may cause acne problems – Soy is a particular problem in some dogs, leading to skin problems.

The most common cause is drinking, and/or eating from older plastic bowls.

-Treatment-

The first thing an owner must do is consider the cause. Treating for acne does no good if the contributing factors are not addressed.

Check to see that the dogs food does not contain any Soy (a noted problem for Pit Bull Terriers). If so, select a different food and make a gradual change.

Eliminate all plastic food, or water, bowls. These cannot be cleaned properly (even with bleach) and bacteria can live on them, thus causing acne. Switch to stainless steel or ceramic bowls. If for some reason you are going to stay using plastic bowls, rinse them with diluted bleach, and discard/replace them every six months.

Veterinary washes containing benzoyl peroxide may be used as directed. Use caution not to get any near the dogs eyes.

Most dogs will outgrow acne at one year of age. Spaying or neutering may also control the problem when it is hormonal.

Never use human acne medication on your dogs. Not only is their acne different, but because pets groom themselves they may ingest dangerous chemicals.

Antibiotics may be prescribed by a veterinarian in severe cases, as when itching becomes extreme.

Supplements of Omega Fatty Acids may help improve the dogs overall skin condition, thus reducing outbreaks.

Switching to hypoallergenic dog food may result in an improvement when the condition is the result of food allergies or sensitivity to ingredients.

Always avoid mystery ingredients in pet foods, (these can be problems unto themselves but also contribute to pets developing allergies and possibly acne as a result). Such mystery ingredients are “meatmeal” and “meat by-products” basically unspecified meat sources.

Exposure to the sunlight may also help improve problems seen in canine acne.
