Home remedies for dry, callused feet

Created on: July 18, 2010

Feet are extremely well designed parts of our body. Carrying so much weight everyday should grant them pampering and respect. As a result of their hard work, feet often produce pads of hardened skin. These pads are commonly known as calluses. Though not very pretty, nor appreciated, they do serve a purpose. A callus is a self generated shield, produced to protect certain areas from harm.

Often found on the hands and feet, they are a result of regular heavy lifting and plenty of walking. They are mainly formed on the areas of the foot that bears most weight, the ball and the heel. Calluses can also be a result of ill fitting shoes or shoes with limited flexibility. With every step taken, calluses are compressed against the sensitive underlying tissue. This can leave your feet with an aching or burning sensation.

There are many products on the market designed to remedy dry callus feet. Though finding the right one to help you, could be a cost avoided. Most already have readily available ingredients at home in the cupboard. Home remedies are becoming increasingly popular, though not miracle cures. They can be used to treat over 100 different health complaints, enhancing ones overall well being. A home remedy can be just as effective and safe as those shop bought. With the added benefit of being a fraction of the cost. Try some of these proven home treatments to relieve those tired, hard working feet and restore their beauty.

Pumice Stone

Probably one of the most commonly known remedies for calluses and dry skin. They are readily available, cheap and more often than not already owned. Pumice is a piece of igneous rock formed from molten lava then shaped for the shops. It has a rough texture similar to sandpaper, is extremely lightweight and porous. The roughness of the pumice is an ideal texture for wearing away tough calluses. Knowing how to use one correctly is important to avoid injuries such as friction burns.

— It is necessary to soak the feet before hand, as pumice stones work best when the skin is softened.

— Use a gentle scrubbing motion over calluses to remove skin build up. However, do avoid applying excessive pressure as this can lead to burns or sores.

— After removing only the the excess skin from the calluses, apply a moisturiser to soften the area.

Vinegar or Lemon Juice

Being weak acids, they corrode calluses without burning the skin. There are two ways in which they can be applied, trying both will help you find what works best.
