Within the larger organization, all the, top, middle, and first-line managers will work within a variety of different management areas, which include finance, operations, HR, marketing, and information.

Marketing managers

Marketing can be described as the manufacturing, the pricing, promotion (advertising), and logistics of a particular good or service. These marketing managers are accountable for making sure that the firm's product and/or service is available to the consumer of the product/service. Marketing departments are much more sophisticated within those industries that offer consumer products i.e. P&G, and Coca-Cola. These organizations will tend to have a much larger marketing staff thus require more than one marketing manager. To further illustrate, larger firms will have a VP for marketing, a regional manager, in a district sales manager, in which this district sales manager will be seen as the first line manager.

Financial managers

These managers are responsible for the management of the organizations finances, which will include their investments, as well their accounting systems. Without management over this key business area it is quite possible that the firm could in fact collapse. Almost every single company in the world today has been manager within their finance department i.e. VP of finance, regional controller, and/or an accounting supervisor, which would be seen as the first line manager may finance department.

Operations managers

What is meant by operations, easy systems which the firm is in place for creating their products and/or services. These operation managers are responsible for managing the manufacturing, inventory, and ensuring quality of the goods and services. Such production companies as Sony, will need to employ operations managers act almost every level of management for example, a VP of operations, plant manager, and a foreman, which would be seen as the first line manager within the operation.

Human resource managers

Today in business almost every venture, or large business organization will have an HR department. These HR managers work to hire and eventually train new employees, as well to determine the employees compensation, and to ensure their safety within the workplace.

Information managers

This is a newer form of management position which is beginning to find its way into many firms to help manage their information systems. Information managers are given the responsibility for the design and implementation of new technology systems, as well for the disseminating of current/new information within the firm. For example, Purolator, has a Chief Executive Officer, (top manager), a middle manager, as well a lower level manager, often a computer systems officer.
