Starting your own business always means that you are going to incur some expenses.  Freelance writers may have lower initial expenses than many other freelancers but there are some common expenses for freelance writers that must be tracked carefully. Remember, when you file your taxes, many of these expenses will be deductible, but only if you have properly tracked them. Here are some of the common expenses for freelance writers:

Computers and Supplies

Freelance writers depend on their computer and its reliability to keep them in business. In addition to a good computer, freelance writers should have a dependable backup system. Backup systems may range from an external hard drive to a CD system of backups or may be an online subscription service.  Each of these items may be deductible on a freelance writers tax returns if the proper rules are followed.

In addition to backup systems, a freelance writer may elect to use special software to help them work more efficiently and produce better quality work.  Some of these may include:

• Internet Access - Internet access is a requirement for nearly all freelance writers. This expense is generally a monthly fee that is charged by a cable company or an internet access provider. Most freelance writers would be unable to complete their normal tasks without internet access;

• Word Processing Programs - Whether you elect to use a free word processing software like Open Office or you prefer Microsoft Office, you need a word processing program on your computer. Base your needs on what your client expect from you;

• Grammar Checking Software - While there are several free grammar checkers that you can use online, you may prefer a program like WhiteSmoke to verify your grammar before submitting your work to clients;

• Dictation Software - Dictation software can help a freelance writer be more productive and can help mitigate the potential for problems that may be caused by endless hours at a keyboard.  Dictation software like Dragon Naturally Speaking can be a great help to freelance writers.  If you elect to utilize a program like Dragon Naturally Speaking you will most likely want a good headset to increase your productivity.
