Taipei is said by many, to be the New York City of Taiwan. Visitors and natives of Taiwan alike, view Taipei as the financial capital of the island. Even though the history of the city is very humble, currently Taipei is bustling with both old world culture and all the modern conveniences that categorize a mainstream metropolis. It is actually the largest city in Taiwan. Taipei is also considered the center of political activity; policy and political decisions are made and implemented in Taipei. For those looking to experience the fast pace of an Asian city, Taipei will not disappoint. Lovers of natural beauty will also find the city exceptional; as it is surrounded by mountains on all sides.
When visiting Taipei, you’ll want to understand the climate as well. There is a variance in the weather in this part of the world. The very fact that Taipei is in the middle of the Taipei Basin, speaks to the variances that can take place in the weather patterns. The mountains that surround the city also play a part in the weather; as many harsh winds are kept at bay. Most residents say that the variances are greater felt in winter than in the summer months. This means while traveling you should be prepared with a variety of clothing options. Typically, however, the winters in Taipei are much warmer than in North America. Once out of the city proper, you’ll enjoy not only mountain views, but winding rivers, green terrain, coastal plains and wetlands that are aesthetically pleasing.
Transportation
To get to Taipei by air you will utilize one of two airports: the Taipei Songshan or the Taiwan Taoyuan International. Transportation in Taipei is considered very advanced and allows visitors and residents to visit all parts of the island very efficiently. However, if renting a vehicle, you must drive defensively. There will be other motorists and motorcyclists that must be watched carefully. Many newcomers to the city have a harrowing experience while driving; due to the lack of obedience to the traffic laws that regulate the cities vehicles.
Most use public transport in and around Taipei. The Taipei Station is a one stop shop for travelers. It houses the depots for the cities efficient subway and rail systems. For the more seasoned traveler or residents buses are used quite frequently. You’ll find bus stop throughout the city as well.
