A road trip should be fun but well-prepared for in advance. Your trip can be made much simpler if you have everything on hand but sometimes there are unforeseen predicaments that arise like where to eat, get gas, and where to sleep. The Apple iPhone has become one of the greatest tools for travelers, not just for emergencies but to keep you organized and on track. These iPhone apps are perfect for your next road trip – not just for information but to keep everyone happy and safe.
Navigation
So that you always find your way and to prevent getting lost, the App Store has many great navigational apps. Some of the GPS apps are costly so read reviews and decide which one(s) is best for your road trip.
TomTom U.S.A – The TomTom navigational app costs $49.99 but has everything a traveler needs in a GPS system. Not only does the TomTom show the directions, it can give you turn-by-turn instructions to help prevent you from getting lost. The TomTom U.S.A. app is compatible with the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.
AT&T Navigator – When visiting the iTunes store, don’t be fooled by the “free” cost of the AT&T Navigator app. Technically, the app is free but there are fees involved to use the app. You can pay monthly or yearly and the fees are charged to your AT&T wireless bill. Like the TomTom app, the AT&T Navigator can help with directions and it will give turn-by-turn directions. It also has traffic updates and offers re-routing suggestions.
Food and Important Places
When it's time to fill up either your stomach or the gas tank, these apps offer a variety of tasks to fit your needs. Finding a place to eat or local businesses in an unfamiliar town just got easier.
Urbanspoon – This a great app for finding restaurants and best of all, it’s free! The app uses GPS to find your location and searches local places to eat. It also offers reviews of the eateries so you can make an educated choice on the eatery. The Urbanspoon app is available for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.
Yelp – Yelp is a good app for travelers mainly because it’s free. The Yelp app will find businesses for you including restaurants and gas stations. Once a location is found, the app provides the address and phone number of the business. Yelp (the website) has received bad reviews for the way they do business. Some people going so far as saying that the website extorts businesses for ads via bad reviews.
