If God is so powerful, why does evil exist

by David Balaban

Created on: July 18, 2010

It is true that God has the power to obliterate evil, and He will destroy evil once and for all.  But why is there evil in the world today?  Before answering this question, one must find out the origin of evil.

Evil didn't always exist.  A long time ago, there was perfect harmony in all the universe.  There wasn't such thing as envy, hatred, or disloyalty.  The angels willingly obeyed their Creator.  In His love, God gave each of his created beings the power of choice, free will.  But none of the celestial beings had a reason to disobey their King.  God is perfect, fair, kind, considerate, all-powerful, glorious, ..., a true King worthy of praise.  God loved his creations as a father would love his child.   Harmony would exist in heaven only as long as love pervaded.  The foundation of the government of God is the law of love.

It is a mystery how evil entered the universe.  Everything was perfect until Lucifer rebelled against God in heaven.  The bible says the following about Lucifer:  "Thus saith the Lord God; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty. Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was the covering. . . .Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so; thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee." Ezekiel 28:12-15  Lucifer was a "covering cherub".  He was in the immediate presence of God.  As it says in the text, Lucifer was perfect, which means he was without evil, or sin, until "iniquity was found in [him]".  The Scripture says "Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness." Ezekiel 28:17.  It's truly a mystery why Lucifer began to exalt himself.  Keep in mind that he had freewill.  Even though sin and evil didn't exist before, the possibility of it to be born was always there.  Sin and evil is simply rebellion against God.  It is disobediance to Him.  Lucifer began to desire the worship that belonged only to God for himself.  The bible says: Thou hast said in thine heart, . . . I will exalt my throne above the stars of God. . . . I will be like the Most High." Isaiah 14:13, 14.  This is the beginning
