Safari

On Saturday morning, Tyler tried to call his friends to come over, but they were all busy or gone on vacation with their families. He would have to find some thing to do alone. Looking out the window towards the woods he decided to go on a safari by himself. A make believe safari where he could sneak up on wild animals. He can wear his invisible suit. Rummaging through his closet, he found his green pants and green jacket.

At breakfast his mother asked:

"What are you going to do today? I see you are wearing your invisible suit."

"I’m going on safari to stalk wild animals."

"Africa or the Amazon?" she said smiling.

"Africa, there’s more wild animals there."

"Would you like some oatmeal cookies to take along?"

"Okay," Tyler nodded his head and smiled.

Tyler found his canteen and filled it with water. No explorer would leave without that. Putting on his Disney World hat, he started for the woods across the field. He could hear the crows sounding their alarm and they left when he entered the woods.

The woods was dark and the gnarly old trees blotted out most of the sun. Tyler stopped for a long time listening. He could hear birds and other sounds deeper in the trees. Cautiously he began walking Indian style putting toes down first instead of heels. He taught himself to walk silently like that a couple years ago.

Sunbeams filtered through the trees leaving only a few bright patches on the ground, but they gradually disappeared as he ventured deeper into his jungle. He could smell the rotting leaves that blanketed the ground. The air was moist and heavy as sweat formed on his forehead. He could hear the faint sound of a squirrel rustling leaves high in the trees. The stillness closed in on him and his ears clung to every sound.

He crept along silently through the jungle, using every fallen limb and stump for cover. When he heard the hollow sound of open space ahead he knew this was where the water hole was. His imagination began to build as he crept forward.

Ahead he saw two yellow eyes peering through the leaves at the edge of the woods near the water hole. A leopard lay on a limb watching unaware of him and Tyler knew that his invisible suit was working.

A herd of elephants came for water. A big male with long tusks was first to drink and was followed by the rest of the herd. Their huge feet sloshed into the mud and their trunks sprayed water everywhere. The herd splashed and played for a long time before the big bull decided that it was
