Reflections: Mother

by Amanda Sullivan

Created on: July 17, 2010

When in  her womb she nurtured us. She was happy her baby was growing. She worried about getting the nutrients to the baby that it needed. She was proud to be a mother.

When we were born she went through pain, but she bore it all with patience. She was tired but happy when we were born into the world. She was loving and giving. She did the dirty work like changing our diapers and keeping us clean. She did it because she knew this was what a mother must do. She did not complain because she wanted to be a mother.

We began to grow and do things for ourselves. We crawled, talked and walked. She hovered over us, so worried that we would fall. Then she learned we were old enough to do things by ourselves. She was always protective and dried our tears. No one should hurt her child. Her child was beautiful. Her child was sweet. Her child was perfect even with it's faults. She was our mother and a friend.

The teenage stage came along and we were enemies. She wanted us to do things right. We wanted our independence. We argued and said the other one didn't understand. Mom was so old. We were so young. She said that guy wasn't good enough for her little girl. That guy was bad news. The girl said she was a woman and this man was okay. She was smart enough to know the difference. Not too much later the girl found out that mom was right. Maybe mom wasn't so old after all.Through it all, mother still loved us. We loved her too, though we had our differences. In the end we learned to let her have her way sometimes and she did that for us too.

We grew up and realized that mother loved us all the time. She loved us when she corrected us. She loved us when we argued. She wasn't trying to control our lives. She just wanted us to have a better life then she had. She had a good life, but we deserved better in her eyes. She was a perfectionist and wanted the best for us. She learned that sometimes we needed to make mistakes. That's how we learned things. Sometimes what was right to her wasn't right for our lives. She learned to let us grow, but no matter how old we are she will always be our mother. We love you mother.
