Strange sandwich fillings

Strange is in the eye of the beholder, but some sandwich fillings test the conventional standards to the breaking point. Many of us have our own, special renditions of the old classics, but I admit to feeling a bit nauseous every time I see my step-father lather mayonnaise on bread, follow it up with cheez-whiz, and then top it all off with peanut butter. I call it the 'arteriosclerosis sandwich'.

My own favorite variations on a sandwich theme include: Peanut butter and potato chip (best if served on white bread); tuna fish with dried cranberries and water chestnuts (texture, texture!); and almond butter with m &m's. The last is more of a dessert sandwich, and tastes best on Swedish Cardamom Bread.

Here are some luncheon conglomerations I've read or heard of:

1.The Adriatic- Salami and bell pepper with apricot chutney on a Kaiser Roll. I couldn't eat it, but the spicy and sweet are supposed to make for interesting contrast.

2. The Vegetarian- grilled eggplant, sun-dried tomato, cucumbers, red onion and olives with yogurt sauce on focaccia bread- This is one I've actually tried, and it is oddly satisfying.

3. The Manifesto- Plum spread layered on a pancake, sprinkled with coconut, fried shrimp (tails removed) and topped with another pancake. I don't know if this is breakfast or lunch, but my two uncles created it, probably on a bender, and it's been a family classic ever since. I've not yet been induced to try it.

4. The Princess- A toasted english muffin, lightly brushed with marmalade, generously topped with grilled salmon and a dollop of basil mixed with sour cream. Salmon should be warm so that basil mixture melts into fish, and the first bite creates a royal mess. (I made this sandwich up one bored Saturday, and it is regally delicious.)
