Simple ways to conserve energy and save money in your home

Money is something we could all use more of, yet every single day we waste so much of it, needlessly.Wasting precious energy in addition to running up the rate on the electric bill-most are guilty. Conserving energy is simple to do, and one of the easiest ways to save money. Utilize these tips to do both!

*Adjust the Temperature

Set your thermostat to 68 degrees in the summer and 73 degrees in the winter. These temperatures are comfortable for most people, and can keep your energy costs at a minimum. For each degree the thermostat is lowered or raised there is a significant increase in energy costs.

*Place Lamps Wisely

The position of your lamps in the house can have a major impact on energy. Lamps should always be placed in the corners of rooms so the lights reflects off of the walls and ceiling. In return you will have more light for less energy!

*Dust

Dusting the home is a part of our cleaning routine, but many people do not dust the light bulbs! Doing so can result in 50% more light from the bulb and savings in your wallet!

*Check Your Home

Cracks in doors and walls can cause heat and air to go right out the door. Check your home every season to make sure there are none of these visible in your home, and if there are, repair them as soon as possible. Check windows for holes and cracks and use caulk to repair them. Air ducts and the HVAC unit should also be checked and filters cleaned to produce the best possible heating or cooling. Ensuring these things are repaired can result in a dramatic decrease in the cost of your electricity bills.

* Choose your Light Bulbs

Replace the traditional round bulb with a spiral, energy efficient bulb. These bulbs have lower wattage but produce a more natural lighting using less energy. You will be amazed how much these light bulbs can take from the cost of your bill!

*The New Motto: Turn It Off

If you are not using the light, turn it out as you leave the room. Leaving lights on is one of the biggest wastes of money people do each day. Not only should appliances be turned off when not in use, anything that can be unplugged should be unplugged. Even though they are not on, energy is transmitted through the power outlet and appliance.
