In a few minutes the transformation will begin and I will be young and beautiful, just like the old days. They were good. I had my Billy then. But, I can’t think about that now. I have to change. I have less than an hour to go from detective to the girlfriend of the biggest drug dealer in the city.
I leave the house and make my way to the abandoned warehouse where we have our setup. I burst into the door, not wanting to waste any time.
“I have to be at Johnny’s in two hours so let’s get down to business. The drug shipment must be coming soon. The only thing is he doesn’t tell me anything. Every time I ask him about business he tells me not to worry and makes me leave the room. So, I have to find a way to get him to talk.”
My partner, Mark, starts to speak, “There is one option. Look Gabrielle, we’ve had this information since the very beginning. And I never saw it as an option until now. Johnny can’t keep his mouth shut after he makes love. We can’t force you to do anything but I know the kind of detective you are. You won’t let all of this work be for nothing.”
“Look, I know what has to be done. We’re going to get this bastard. I promised that to myself six months ago.”
I finally get to Johnny’s. He is not happy. Johnny’s “hangout” is a bar that he owns and runs legally. Everything illegal happens in the back, or in his apartment upstairs. When I walk in he is sitting at the back table drinking his scotch.
“Isn’t it a little early for scotch?”
“I don’t think you’re in any position to question me. Why the hell are you so late?”
“Johnny, I’m not that late. What the hell is the matter with you?”
The door opens and in walks Vito, Johnny’s partner. He has a look on his face that makes me very nervous.
I look over at Johnny and his eyes are like ice. He looks right through me and stares at Vito, waiting for him to either make a move or say something. I can feel my heart beating faster.
“Listen baby, my pal Vito here has something on his mind. I hope for your sake it’s not true or else we have a big problem.”
“Jesus Johnny, what the hell is it?”
“The word on the street is that you’re a cop.”
“Johnny are you crazy? Me, a cop?”
“Look, you’ve been acting a little strange lately. I want you to tell
