Caring for a Depressed Person

Caring for a depressed person challenges many families and individuals. The depression may arise from justifiable situations, health problems or a chemical imbalance. No matter the consequence, the ones involved care about helping the person work back towards life enjoyment.

Understand the signs

If a person has experienced an extreme circumstance, that causes grief and disappointment depression might follow. You will identify the appearance of depression that the other emotions replaced with depression when a desire for the things that brought enjoyment does not exist. Mention of a desire but choice to fore go provides proof that the person is experiencing the emotion. Some individuals choice to step away from social situations to prevent themselves from putting a damper on an event and would receive added disappointment of not being up to enjoyment. It becomes a secondary loss. If it comes from only wanting to prevent damping the mood, friends, family and acquaintances speak of understanding that this will pass and happiness can return.  Friends and family who continue offering companionship and activities the person will slowly return to normal life, but could move into a more serious depression

If the person exhibits changes in behavior that has given up on happiness in life and has major changes in life such as insomnia or oversleeping, the depression has moved into a serious condition. This provides proof that the mental illness of depression illness has developed and probably remains unless there is treatment. The person needs encouragement to acquire medical treatment of the symptoms. When he goes to the doctor and tells him how he is feeling, the doctor can diagnosis a treatment plan.  It might require medication or referral to specialist such as therapists or psychiatrist. The personal physician remains the first step.

Keeps life going?

Recovery from depression can be slow and treatment might need to change. People around the depressed individual must keep life as normal as possible and encourage the patient to reenter life when comfortable. If the depressed person believes the life of others has changed due to him or her, he or she might experience guilt and attempt to hide so even when you think behavior has improved you need alert to true changes in behavior.

You must keep track of changes in behavior because of side effects of prescription drugs.  Some caregivers  start journaling without notice.

Encouragement remains the most important things people around a depressed person can do. You encourage him or her to get treatment and reenter life.
