What is the meaning of self-fulfilling prophecy?

by Christine Sandor

Created on: July 15, 2010

Thoughts are prayers and our prayers become things. As we journey through our human experience we are co-creators of our lives, our world, with the Divine Source of All. This is no longer a spiritual belief system; it has been shown to be true through the study of quantum physics. As we think and believe, so it is. In the bigger picture, it means that we are responsible for what shows up in our lives, though it should also be noted, we are not always “responsible” for it.

If we hold to a belief of lack and limitation, for instance, it will show up in our life. When finances become a struggle, we automatically begin to long for and perhaps pray for an increase in our income.  Those who are able to hold to and “see” more money as an absolute potential and actually coming into their lives, will see that manifest. Most of us, however, struggle with maintaining such a positive outlook. We have years of “old messages” that weave their way through our consciousness.  These old messages tell us we are, perhaps, unworthy, that there is no way will get what we need, or that if resources come to us the bills will double.  These messages interrupt the flow of positive energy and become self-fulfilling prophecies.

We may not always realize what we are doing when we attract what we don’t really think we want into our lives.  Even when we are consciously calling forward positive situations, if we harbor any doubt or disbelief that is what will manifest.  It is important to know that such a self-fulfilling prophecy in no way means we can “blame” ourselves.  It is within our human nature to struggle with faith in the unseen, to completely trust in the unknown of pure potential.  That is a long and difficult process. Practice is required to step beyond the belief that we do not deserve or choose the law of attraction rather than Murphy’s Law.

A “self fulfilling prophecy” also does not have to be something “negative”.   Holding thoughts of the perfect job, an increase in income, or the right and perfect person showing up in our lives while following any “divine guidance”, is also a self-fulfilling prophecy.   Focusing on what we want and not on what we don’t want is one of the keys to manifesting our hearts desires in our lives. If we know that thoughts become things, we simply need to choose the good ones!
