Essays: Death

What is it that frightens us about death? Is it the fact that once we have shuffled off this mortal coil, we only have faith and spirituality to give us hints of what happens to our spirit? Is it the fact that we lose people who mean so much to us? or is it the principle that we are not immortal?
Well, whatever the reason is, death is something not to really be afraid of.

Think about it for a second; if we could never die, what would be the point of living? There would be no such thing as risk, adventure, or even fear. We would cease to be human, and become something else; something without emotion, something artificial in nature.
Granted, that is a rather prosaic reason to not fear death. However, death is a natural function of life. In order for something to rise, something else must fall. If we could not die, we would have reached critical mass on earth thousands of years ago, eventually choking out any other life forms on the planet. While I mourn the physical passing of my loved ones and friends when they die, I know that they're going onto something better.
When you get down to brass tacks, it is not the package that makes the person, it is what is inside that makes people who they are. So, yes, I miss them when they are physically gone, but I rejoice that they are free to go onto the next adventure - paving the way for me when it is my time to go.
Now, I'm not saying you should go out and kill yourself to get on with the next adventure. What I am saying is that you should live this life to its fullest. Only then will you have a baseline concept of what is 'fun' and 'exciting' for when you go on to whatever happens after.
