Halo series
Microsoft's Halo is already earmarked for a cinematic release with big guns such as Peter Jackson involved and a script penned by Alex Garland ("The Beach"). I think it's currently been halted, but slated for a 2008 release.
On the X-Box and PC it's a first person shooter which are typically not that great when it comes to depth of plot. "Kill the monsters!" or "Kill all zombies!" or... well, you get the idea. The Halo games have plenty going for them with a decent basic plot, but a story that offers up so much more as the games unfold. If you have a look at some of the related merchandising that accompanies the game, then you'll see how much depth there actually is.
Have a look at the books by Eric Nylund, for example, or take a look at the website at http://halo.bungie.org/ to see how much more the story of Halo extends beyond the games.
There are downsides, though. The main hero of Halo, the Master Chief Spartan 117, rarely takes off his helmet and Judge Dredd has already shown how Hollywood treats small, but important details like that.
Baldur's Gate series
The problem with the traditional fantasy RPG genre is that the stories told within them tend to be very same-y and basic. You know the type great evil spreads across the land and only you, a lowly peasant boy can rise above the darkness, beat up the evil tyrant and become romantically involved with the much-loved and gorgeous princess.
Just look at any fantasy film over the last two decades and you'll see a film that's very similar in plot to most computer-based fantasy RPGs. Baldur's Gate doesn't stray too far from the basics involved in fantasy RPGs, but there's just something more to it, in terms of plot, that makes it rise above the rest.
Baldur's Gate offers several side-quests that are entertaining and do offer something a little different to the usual fayre and a slightly different journey from the farm to the gorgeous princess.
Knights of the Old Republic series
KotoR is probably the easiest film to translate to the big screen, after all, it's a role playing game set in the Star Wars universe almost 4000 years before the series of film that everyone knows and loves so well.
All the story elements are already in place, having proved their popularity in six films, and it's a perfect opportunity for Lucasfilm to use one of its most valuable assets without messing with the main story line.
Interstate '76
Set in a parallel world in 1976, I76 tells the story of a very different United States.
