How do we get God's attention

by Bill Woffington

Created on: July 14, 2010

People ask, “What can we do to get God’s attention?”

This in turn leads other people to answer that question with another question. “When,” they might ask, “Did you ever NOT have God’s attention?”

Many people believe God to be everywhere present, all powerful, all knowing and the Creator of all there is. When others say that God doesn’t exist because Creation happened with the Big Bang, these people respond with, “Who do you think put the material there that went bang to start with?”

The very question of how to get God’s attention indicates a belief in God but a belief that leaves a lot to be desired.  If that question is real, if the person asking the question seriously wants to know how to contact God, then they have a problem.  The very fact that they have to ask the question indicates that they conceive God to be a far away, untouchable Being who created us, then left, going somewhere else to do other things. When a person with that belief system asks ‘What can we do to get God’s attention?’ the God of that belief system probably wouldn’t pay attention to them at all.

Consequently, the answer to their question about what they have to do to get God’s attention is ‘Nothing.  There is nothing you can do to get your God’s attention because your God has nothing to do with you.’

If that is not the case however, if our perception of God is that He is always present and aware of His creation, then nothing has to be done on our part to attract God’s attention.  If this all powerful, all seeing, all knowing God was here among us, we don’t have to get His attention.  We already have it.  The question now becomes, what are we going to do about it?

Jesus said, “And Lo, I am with you always, even unto the ends of the earth.”

He also said, ‘the Kingdom of Heaven is within you.”

Thousands of people maintain that their prayers have been answered.  They have been claiming this throughout man’s known history.  If people have had their prayers answered by God, doesn’t it follow that God must have been aware of them and their prayers?

No matter what their religion, people turn to their religious texts for answers.  When they ask, “How do we contact God?” they always get the same answer.  “Pray.” they are told.

More than likely that is the answer here.  How do we get God’s attention?  Why not talk to Him as if you already had his attention.  People don’t get on their cell phones and call God’s number to talk to Him.  They don’t send Him emails hoping for replies.  They don’t shout out their prayers on a street corner.

They go to a quiet place within themselves and they talk to Him.  When they receive an answer, they know they had his attention all along.
