Benefits of giving group projects
There are myriads of benefits to be derived from group projects and many teachers and facilitators have used this novel strategy for encouraging effective learning amongst students of all age cohorts. From this exercise both students and teachers can unearth talents, gifting, and a number of personal characteristics which are beneficial to all the persons involved both on a short and long term basis.
Teamwork is one of the first benefits. Here, all persons have to learn to work together both theoretically and in a practical manner. It is also a time to share; this is a departure from the individual work that they were accustomed. This will prove to be a difficult and challenging task but adaptation can take place. Any number of persons can be called upon to work together. They are called to introduce themselves, critically examine the topic and assign different persons to research it. Usually a time period is given for regrouping and collection of assigned work so that the finished product can be scrutinized by all. If there is need for dramatization, and practice for presentation all this can be done in subsequent meetings at specific time and place.
Another benefit that comes to the fore is leadership. A number of traits will become evident when the person assumes the responsibility of being in charge. Whether the leader is chosen or volunteer this individual has to coordinate the assignment, motivate the group and press for accountability so that others are kept on their toes to play their roles. If the leader is influential others realize and will appreciate the skills exhibited and co-operate so that all benefit.
Competencies in research skills will be the third benefit. Since each member is empowered to do one aspect of the project those persons whose work is strong in subscribing to accuracy of data collection, critical analysis, comprehension to name a few will be noted. Persons who display weaknesses will have to be helped and guided for the group's progress.
A fourth benefit is personal characteristics. Some students are intrinsically motivated so they will encourage others who may be nonchalant and will cause the group to be discouraged; while others will display outrage and intolerance to those who are as not as competent as they thought they should be and for holding up the progress of the group, still other members will be patient, kind, respectful to all. It is the skills of the leader who will diffuse these negative traits and bring about a compromise and the ultimate goal of the group work.
A fifth benefit is the discoveries that are unleashed for both teachers and students. Students in their report will highlight their learning task; and normally state which particular task they enjoy. The teacher on the other hand will now feel uplifted because new gifting and talents are observable as the students make their presentations. The teacher or facilitators will be able to advice on career path or areas for further studies the students accordingly.
Group work is always a challenge because students are initially oriented to work individually but to integrate into the world of work and to take on society's challenges this must be done on a cooperate basis so this is how projects are beneficial.
