How to limit the effects of a hangover

All home brewers know the answer to limiting hangovers is the vitamins in brewers yeast.   Homebrewed bear often leaves residue of the fermentation yeast in the bottle.   This residue is high in thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, B6, and B12, and a folic acid.    Your body uses these vitamins to remove alcohol from your body.   Those experienced drinking home brewed beer know the after effects of drinking homebrewed beer are mild in comparison to drinking commercially produced beer.   Commercially produced beer has all the yeast residues removed hence it does not have the high vitamin content found in homebrews.   Perhaps over the thousands of years of beer drinking, those who could best utilize the nutrients in the beer to recover were more likely to survive after drinking.     Beer has only been cleaned of the yeast products since it became a mass marketed product after the railroads were built.

Any hangover medicine worth taking would be loaded with vitamins which are found in brewers yeast.   There are other things to do to help your body recover from the effects of a hangover.

1. Drink water to rehydrate your body.    Although drinking other liquids may help, nothing will help you rehydrate faster than water.    I knew someone who thought drinking coffee would help him recover from his hangover.   He ended up having severe dehydration systems which sent him to the hospital.   Your body is trying to purge the poisons from your body and it needs water to do it.

2. Sleep it off.   Drink a glass of water. Take some Motrin or other pain reliever and go back to bed.   Let your body repair itself while you’re unconscious.

3. The traditional coffee and pain reliever will work, but make sure to drink some water as well.

4. Eat.  Get some nutrients into the body to help it heal from the previous nights festivities.  Preferably nutrient rich food such as fruit and eggs.

5. Try to stick to the simple tasks.   No point in working the brain too hard when you have a hangover.   No need for the hangover effects to be extended by making bad decisions at work or your personal life because you weren't feeling up to the task.

Good luck, and perhaps the best advice is to know how to limit your drinking so you won't get the hangover in the first place.
