Movie reviews: The Twilight Saga: Eclipse

by Rebecca Hawkins

Created on: July 13, 2010   Last Updated: July 14, 2010

Eclipse is the third book in the now hugely famous "twilight saga" series written by Stephenie Meyer and subsequently the third to be transformed into film.

Plot

In Eclipse, we rejoin Bella and world secret, but while they are doing so they may just drop in to the Cullens for a visit as Bella is human and should not know about the existence of vampires, however, she is only currently still alive because the Cullens promised they would change her at some point, to which they haven't yet.

So the Cullens decide to take matters into their own hands and sort out the Seattle problem. With the help of Jacob Black (who is a werewolf\shape-shifter due to his Quiluette tribe heritage) and his pack they can probably manage it.

There is also a continuing love triangle between Bella, Jacob and Edward throughout. Who will she pick? Is she Team Jacob or Team Edward?

Each of the three films have had a different director so far so each has had its own style and feel to the characters and scenes. Eclipse was directed by David Slade, a reasonably unknown film director with only a few major productions under his belt, was curious how his style would cross over with the always 12a English (pg13 American) certificate that the series seems to carry to be accessible to its target audience.

The film was darker, from the opening scene where we follow a young man down a rainy Seattle alleyway to the fight scenes with actual contact, it was darker. I was so relieved. This book needs darker and David Slade managed to keep the 12a rating, only marginally in my opinion, but he did but still gave me as a fan of the series exactly what I expected from the action packed pages of the book onto the screen.

I'm not sure if it is purely down to the directing or the fact the actors have finally gotten to grips with their characters but the acting was 10 times better than New Moon, which in turn was 10 times better than Twilight.

Kristin Stewart who plays main character Bella has always grated on me. In the beginning she was bland and lifeless, pouty, moaning and whining all the time, which are some traits Bella is supposed to have, but she is also suppose the be funny and sarcastic and have little play fights and silly conversations with Edward etc. In the first film we saw none at all of this which completely ruins the connection we are supposed to believe her and Edward have, as it is hard to understand at all why he would be so devoted to this miserable boring girl. In New Moon they worked
