Summer educational activities for kids

by Debbie Robus

Created on: July 12, 2010

As a former school teacher, I heard more than one parent lament the summer break for their children.  They were in a quandary over how to occupy their brood for the twelve weeks or so... and most were delighted when mid-August heralded the onset of another school year.  Indeed, some parents and educators have come to advocate year-round school, with more frequent breaks throughout the year.  They claim that this would help the children stay focused.  I tend to believe that the motives lie more in helping the parents than the children.

So what are some "summer educational activities" for kids?  Here are a few that I like... and why:

* Playtime...
Sounds too simple?  Consider this... children learn more than we realize through playtime.  They learn about friendship and how to interact with others and share.  They learn gross and fine motor skills through the manipulation of everything from building blocks to a kickball.  They get physical fitness via outdoor games and playground equipment.  They develop an imagination and creativity through role playing (i.e. "house" or "school") and enhance thinking skills by playing board games and working puzzles.  We have long underestimated the benefits of good, old-fashioned playtime... but it's benefits are immense and should be recognized.

* Vacation Bible School...
Every community hosts at least one Vacation Bible School, and in some of even the smallest cities, there are a half dozen of these or more.  Just because your child attends another church does not mean he/she is unable to participate in these.  Many churches would welcome the opportunity to share the love of Jesus with your child each day for a week.  VBS teaches children much more than Bible stories and scripture verses.  The children participate in arts and crafts, sharing and interacting with other children and adults, and musical activities.  There is also an element of structure that is introduced via group sessions and study lessons.  Watch your local paper for the dates and times of Vacation Bible Schools in your area, and select at least one for your child to attend.

* Swimming lessons...
Nearly every community has an individual or organization that offers swimming lessons in the summer.  Look for an instructor who is Red Cross certified.  These could be some of the most valuable hours your child ever spends in the water... and the lessons will last a lifetime.
