There is no reason for most of us to believe that we must kiss up to our boss in order to gain favour in our jobs. In fact, kissing up to the boss can result in a loss of favour in some cases. If you are good at your job, there are many ways to get ahead in the workplace and be successful without the necessity of kissing up to the boss. Here are some of the ways you can get ahead without kissing up:
Be on time for work - showing up at your place of employment on time day after day will get you noticed. You may work with a colleague who is consistently late, even by a few moments. These colleagues will also be noticed, but not for the same reason.
Be proactive in your approach - if you see processes that could be working more efficiently, test your theory. Being proactive will get you noticed and may be a good reason for your superiors to consider helping your career progress. This shows you to be interested in the company goals and not just your personal goals without kissing up to the boss.
Be helpful to colleagues - If you see a colleague struggling with a task and you can assist, you should take it upon yourself to offer your assistance. Not only will your colleague appreciate the help, your superiors will see you as helpful and able to render service to other workers without feeling a need for recognition. This is another great way of standing out in your company that does not require you kissing up to your boss.
Meet your deadlines - If your superiors set deadlines for tasks to be complete make sure you either meet or exceed them on a regular basis. There is no need for you to kiss up to the boss if you are good at what you do and you consistently meet your goals or those goals set by your superiors.
Accept criticism - If you are criticised by a colleague or a superior, accept that criticism with grace and dignity. Do not try to defend yourself against it, accept and learn from criticism.
Summary
Your career success hinges on your performance as an employee. You do not have to kiss up to the boss to get ahead, you need to be consistent in your performance, be helpful to colleagues and consistently provide high quality work on time. Career success does not mean kissing up to the boss to get ahead.
