Harvey Shine lives and works in America, he is having a hard time at work making jingles as he uses the old method of actually playing them on the piano but his bosses want to make them using computers. He has to leave work and an important job to come to London for his daughters wedding.
Harvey arrives in London after a long flight and being rude to a member of staff at the airport to find none of the other weeding guests are staying at the hotel but in a rented house by his ex-wife. He meets up with the wedding party but things are quite strained between Harvey and the other family members as his daughter regards her step dad as more of a father than Harvey. During the meal Harvey gets a call to say he has been sacked so he decides to hit the bottle. Harvey leaves the meal and ends up in a bar where he bumps into the lady he was rude to at the airport and they get chatting.
Harvey using his charm to make friends with Kate and they soon find they have a lot in common and enjoy each others company. Kate is a single woman who has a very possessive Mom, she has never had any luck with men and thinks she is destined to spend her life alone. The following day Harvey attends his daughter's wedding, but does not hang around. When he misses his flight he bumps into Kate again and they spend even more time together and their friendship grows.
Will Kate be able to help Harvey rescue his strained relationship with his daughter and just how long can their friendship last with Harvey waiting for his flight home?
I had been wanting to see this film for some time as it stars two good actors and I though that them teaming up would make a great film, I really was not disappointed in the slightest. The storyline was very good although it was nothing new. I found it was quite predictable from the middle onwards but this was not a bad things as it meant I was able to watch and enjoy the film without having to concentrate too much on what was going on.
The role of Harvey Shine was played by Dustin Hoffman and I found he was great. I was instantly able to warm to him and like him a lot. He was very outspoken and this bought some humour to the storyline. There were times when my heart strings were pulled at as he got a rough ride with his daughter but this made for good viewing and gave the storyline some depth and emotion. He worked very well with the role of Kate and they had a very natural on screen chemistry. Kate was played by Emma Thompson and she too was
