Long days, bright sunshine, hot, hazy, and humid; yes it is summer time and our bodies are screaming for relief from the heat. What can you do to keep cool without burning a hole in your pocket? Here are some ways to beat the summer heat without wasting money on air conditioning.
1.) Open the windows:
This is a no brainer. Open the windows and let the fresh air in. It is important to get cross ventilation so the air inside the house is moves enough to keep the house cooler.
2.) Whole house fan:
Install a whole house fan in the attic to pull the hot air out and the cool air in. It is amazing how this will lower the temperature inside and keep the hot air out of the attic. If you have a basement you can keep the basement door open and pull even cooler air out from there and into the rest of the house.
3.) Ceiling fans:
Ceiling fans have been used for years to keep the air flowing indoors. The gentle movement of air from a ceiling fan will make your house comfortable during the hottest of days in summertime.
4.) Window awnings:
Awnings over the windows will help shade your home and keep it cool. With the windows open you want to make sure nothing blocks the flow of air, but you don’t want direct sunlight heating your house. Awnings are the perfect solution. They will shade as well as add a decorative flare to your home.
5.) Other people’s money:
This is simple. Most financially successful people understand it is always better to use other people’s money instead of their own. When the weather is hot and humid and hard to handle, why not take a ride to the local mall, library, Movie Theater or other public place where the air is conditioned and comfortable. This is a good respite that costs you nothing.
6.) Slow down, you move too fast:
When the day heats up it is time to slow down. People living in the southern states of America have understood this for a long time. Take it easy, slow down and have a cold drink. Your heart will beat slower and you will not feel as hot.
7.) Water:
Drink plenty of water in order to stay hydrated. When you are properly hydrated you will have the ingredients your body needs to perspire. Perspiration is a natural way to cool off. Cool showers and cold compresses on your body will help too.
8.) Clothing:
Break out the lighter clothing. Loose fitting and light colored clothes will aid in keeping cool. You can be fashionable and cool at the same time.
9.) Food:
Cooking in the house just adds more heat to make you feel uncomfortable. Do as much cooking outside on the grill as you can. The type of food you eat can make a difference too. Fresh fruits and vegetables, cold salads, and sandwiches are much cooler than hot soups, stews and hot chili.
Conclusion:
Summertime is fun time and it does not have to make you miserable when it really heats up. Try some of these suggestions and enjoy one of the best seasons of the year.
