The topical subject of Internet safety yields a diversity of 'DO's' and 'DON'Ts'. I have compiled a list of basic points to consider when browsing the WWW. Searching local authority websites is useful in both gaining security tips as well as increasing your Internet knowledge. I have an example of such a site based in Ireland but the information can be used for Internet use globally:
Shopping
You will know that you are on a secure Internet site by looking at the address bar. The address will have the prefix ‘https:’ the‘s’ denotes secure. Visa and MasterCard have developed a global service (for participating merchants), Verified by Visa and MasterCard secure code respectively. Both services involve a registration whereby a pin code is issued and integrates a step as part of the on-line sales process and increasing security.
Shopping via sites such as eBay and Amazon are both secure but you will also need to be aware of details such as the sellers rating. A good idea would be to research your seller's previous ratings etc and this will give you a good enough point of view on their integrity. Be fully acquainted with the shipping information, particularly rates and estimated times of arrival. Be aware of the sellers cancellation, returns and complaint procedures.
Request for Information
Be aware of phishing, although this seems like common sense, there are a number of frauds committed by bogus emails sent to an unsuspecting Email account requesting details such as account numbers etc.
It is never advisable to email your personal information or account details over the Internet. Many companies will advertise now on their main page that they will never email you for such details.
Children
I would recommend strict policing the use of your Child's access to the Internet. There are programs available to lock down the use of your home PC system like net nanny. With the advent of integrated chat programs in, for example, Gmail mail, it's very easy to get on-line and chatting to strangers. Instant messaging has been known to be used as a platform to groom children.Knowing how and why your children use the Internet will give you a better idea as to what you need to be aware of and alert to.
A better understanding of the Internet will help as technology can seem daunting to some users. Opt to educate yourself and you will reap the benefits with a better knowledge of how it works.
