Poetry: Happy and sad

by A. M. Gilbert

Created on: July 11, 2010

With an angry, self-conscious set of your jaw,
you hiss that it isn't fair.
You send at your offender a hideous glare,
and your eyes throw in a mocking dare.

He just goes on smiling serenely,
and it's like he doesn't even know
that you're repulsed by his show
or where you want to tell him to go.

You kick at a bit of trash on the ground,
and you wonder why he's so content
while you're just wasted and spent
and now all you want to do is vent.

He checks his watch periodically,
like he's got nothing but time.
He looks positively sublime,
while you consider you're in your prime

yet jealous of an old man.
Envy is now setting you on fire
and you're filled with the strangest desire
to hit him in the face, call him a liar.

You have decades and decades left,
God willing, you should celebrate!
This old guy's soon bound to meet his fate
all he has left to do is wait.

Even knowing the reality of it,
deepest sadness overcomes you;
his smile falters a bit, like he caught his cue;
you just wish you could be happy too.
