It was a day of great sorrow and grief
One about to be born, and one on the way of being the deceased
The addition and subtraction factor stands in place
Life and death, which is inevitable, and has great might
A great grandfather on his way to a better place
He lived for many years, where he laughed, lived, and loved
Now, he heavenly father is calling from up above
Although his family will grieve, they should not fret
Because he's going to a better place and that's his best bet.
But just a few hours before, down the hall, on the next floor
The gift of life was being brought into the world
7lbs 15 oz bundle of joy, wrapped in pink, and who starred up above
As though she was looking to heaven to see her great grandfather
Making the transition from this life, to eternal life in the skies above
A smile began to form upon her face as he said his hello and good-bye's to her.
It was only seconds apart from each other, when the addition and subtraction factor happened.
Meanwhile back down the hall, on the next floor, the monitor stopped
The doctors and family could say no more, he slipped away and was knocking on heaven's door
The family said their last good-byes and they cried out, asking “why”?
Then a subtle voice whispered, “it was time, and now there's a new addition to our family, but don't fret because I'll always be here every time you look at her, you'll see me”
So that gave the family comfort, knowing that the addition and subtraction factor wasn't in vain, they lost someone special, but they also gained someone even more special.

Before you my heart was a dull shade of gray,
My life it crept forward; the same day to day.
You came along and added colors

If I tell you of your wonderful qualities...
Allow me to subtract your few human frailties.
I add your liking of children,
Little boy so nervous, standing there before the class,
And next to him a little girl, a pretty red-haired lass.
A problem

The Road
Old Time and I once shared a road.
The years were light as was my load.
We marked each moment with a smile
And walked
In the beginning I had nothing,
Then I found my beloved friend,
We became two,
As time passed,
We grew old together,
