Last summer my husband and I drove around Lake Superior, towing our trailer. What a wonderful vacation! Here are some ideas of what to do and see on the shores of this beautiful lake.
1. Stay in Neys Provincial Park in Ontario. We had a campsite that was right on the shore of the lake. It was a lot like being in the Caribbean. All night we could hear the waves hitting the shore. While the terrain was less breathtaking than Lake Superior Provincial Park which has a large number of hills/mountains, Neys had some beautiful beaches.
2. Explore Thunder Bay, Ontario. Make time to visit Ouimet Canyon, which has the world's largest suspension bridge. Kakabeka Falls is the second largest waterfall in Ontario, after Niagara Falls. It is spectacular.
3. Visit Grand Marais, Minnesota. It is a beautiful small town on the shore of the lake. There are many artists in the area, so there are a number of shops to visit and explore.
4. Stay in Duluth, Minnesota for more than one night. The people are extremely friendly and helpful, should you need anything. There is a beautiful waterfront with fabulous restaurants and a wonderful boardwalk. There is the Great Lakes Aquarium to visit as well as many other attractions. You will also be able to see several big ships in the harbor there that are going under the Aerial Lift Bridge. There are also boat tours around the harbor you can take.
5. Visit Sault Ste. Marie, both the Michigan and the Ontario sides. There are wonderful tours of the locks where the big ships pass between Lake Superior and Lake Michigan, there are stores and good restaurants too. Again, the people were very friendly and helpful.
Take your time driving around Lake Superior. The area is rather sparsely populated and there are many points where you can take beautiful photos. There is a lot of wildlife so drive carefully. If you plan to camp, Ontario Provincial Parks are an inexpensive place to stay, and the Michigan State Parks are another good place to camp. The on-line reservation system for both works well. This is a trip you should really consider taking, if you enjoy the outdoors.
