A guitar is an expensive purchase; you want to make sure you are getting the best bang for your buck. Research the product just like anything else. Most of the guitar tabliture sites, such as mxtabs.net, have forums with product reviews. And, as always, google is a good resource when searching for reviews.
Buying a guitar online can seem like an atractive solution, but it isnt always the right one. If you are new to playing guitar you should be leary about buying online. There is really no way for you to know how the guitar feels or if you would enjoy playing it. If you insist on buying online, through ebay or muscians friend, then make a trip to a local music shop to try the brand you wish to buy.
Personally I prefer to buy locally and not from a chain store. The owners are better apt to cut you a deal, the store is close buy should you have any problems with your guitar, and you can get a big smile on your face from helping out the little guys :D
