We live in a chaotic world. Our daily lives are consumed by overwhelming amounts of information coming at us; stress, high blood pressure and anxiety are common. If we are to find peace, bring it into and make it a part of our lives, we must begin from the inside out.
Because we are spiritual beings having a human experience, the peace of the Universe resides within us. It is not lost; it has been temporarily misplaced. The path to reclaiming your peace is a mere 18 inches away: from head to heart.
Meditation is one of the simplest ways to “tune” back in to our inner selves and rediscover the Love, Light, Peace and Joy that reside there. Just as you take time each day to nourish your body with food and water, it is good to take time to nourish the soul and find that place of peace within us. Create for yourself a quite place where you will not be interrupted by phone, family or other outside distractions. Consider this as your meeting time with the God of your being.
This is your time; therefore, while there are suggestions as to how best to meditate, it is important to remember that you should follow your own inner guide as to what is comfortable for you. Many suggest sitting in the traditional lotus position or “pretzel legs”. This position is said to contribute to the positive flow of Divine energy but if you have bad knees, this won’t be very comfortable! If you sit in an upright position with back straight and feet on the floor, you are also aligning yourself with heaven and earth and allowing the flow of Universal energy. It is not recommended that you lay down to meditate as you may find yourself dozing off!
Once comfortable, you should begin to take deep, slow breaths. Focus as much as you can on your breath as this will help control your thoughts. It is normal for thoughts to wander during meditation. If you notice this, simply acknowledge it as “thinking”, bless it and release it. As you become more relaxed, move your consciousness from your head to heart. This is the life source within you and the place where the Divine resides. No matter what you chose to call your God, the essence of it is within you and waiting to connect with you. Here you will find the source of your inner peace. As you spend a few minutes within, you can discover the wisdom of carrying that peace with you and accessing it whenever and wherever you go.
