Poetry: Prostitution

Secret Life

Smoke fills the air in a dimly lit room
Accompanied by the smell of liquor and cheap perfume
Two strangers get closer in the dark
Awkward touching that somehow ignites a spark
In the darkness of her own guilt she gives herself away
She shudders as she thinks of what will be said the next day
Along with the cold stares and silent insults from the town
That alone should be enough to bring her down
But she thinks of the money and the joy it brings
And at that split second she doesn’t mind doing these things
In the midst of her thoughts, the encounter comes to an end
She collects the payment from her one time friend
She makes her way home, guilt in her heart, tears in her eyes
She wonders how long it will take until they see through her lies
But it hurts that she tried everything before it came down to this
On the foreheads of her five sleeping kids, this single mother planted a kiss.
