You can save money on your grocery bill by clipping coupons, but this can be very time consuming. You have to remember to take the coupons to the store, and you have to use them before they expire. There are ways you can lower your grocery bill without clipping coupons and without remembering to take things with you.
Buy in Bulk
Buying in bulk will reduce the amount of times you have to go to the store. Less trips means savings on both your gas and your grocery bill. Less trips to the store also means less chances of impulse buying!
If you shop once a week, rearrange your schedule and finances to allow you to buy your major groceries every two weeks. Buy a two weeks supply of food for your meals and snacks in one trip. Purchase can goods in cases, instead of buying one or two cans of vegetables weekly.
Purchase a used freezer and buy meat in already made up freezer bundles. You can even reduce your meat shopping to once a month. This will mean less time you are spending in the store, so there is less chance once again of impulse buying.
Look For Sales at Different Grocery Stores
Save the grocery store fliers that you get in the mail. Look these over before you go shopping to see which store is offering the best deals. Plan your grocery list around what is on sale, not what you really want. If chicken is the best deal this week, buy chicken. Perhaps beef will be on sale next week.
You can alternate different types of meat by buying large quantities of whatever is on sale that particular shopping week and putting it in your freezer. Buy prepackaged family size meats and separate it yourself. Slide the smaller portions into freezer bags, label it with a permanent marker and put it in the freezer.
Grow Your Own Vegetables
You don’t have to have a massive garden to grow your own vegetables. Even a few patio containers of tomatoes will save you a lot of money on groceries. You can use the home grown tomatoes in salads, on sandwiches and even to season noodles.
If you have the room, or desire, grow a few heads of cabbage and broccoli too. These plants are fairly easy to grow and will save you a lot of money instead of buying them at the store. You can even grow tiny pots of herbs on your window sills. If you have ever priced herbs and spices, you know this will save a lot on your grocery bill!
