Poetry: Shout and whisper

by A. M. Gilbert

Created on: July 08, 2010

Listen to the silence.
Listen to the air.
It's beautiful without the sound
of you, shouting you don't care.

Appreciate the silence.
Inhale the sweet night air.
Avert your eyes to see the stars
Instead of throwing me a glare.

We could live in the silence.
We could be unobtrusive like the air.
And maybe one day you'd hear me
As I desperately whisper, "I do care."

When I was young, just a child,
You told me time and time again
About saying something nice or nothing at all,
That a sword was nothing compared to a pen.

I didn't have to whisper back then.

You would have been glad to hear it.

This is our family now.
This is our way of life.
Our words cut, as if
We each wielded a knife.

Tell me this is healthy.
Lie to me, alright?
Then maybe I'll believe
you love your child,
    - love me -
with all your might.

Maybe I'll believe we did things right.

Maybe we won't have to yell tonight.
