The Shoes
John walked across the hall to his little brother’s room, opened the door and just stared. He faded back to the day his dad and mom sat him down 5 years ago and explained to him that he was going to have a little brother and what his role was.
“John, we need to tell you about a new addition to the family.” His dad said.
“Are we getting a puppy?” John always wanted a puppy because of mom’s allergies pets didn’t fit into their life.
“Not a puppy. But, would you settle for a little brother.”
John set there a second with a look like mom had grown a second head.
“What about me?”
“John, you are getting a little brother and his name will be Adam.” Dad continued, “He will be here in two months and you have to help us prepare.”
“What do I need to help with? Like changing his poopy diaper and make sure he gets all the attention?” “Well, you might have to change a poopy diaper but what we really want you to do is be his big brother and help us teach him right from wrong and look out for him when he needs you to.”
John was slouching a bit not taking the news well, adjusted his self so he was setting up straight and said ” I can do that” with a puffed out chest.
John heard the front door open and his mom walk in. “John you home?”
“Yes mom.” He shook his head back to the present.
He walked in to Adam’s room and grabbed Adam’s green tennis shoes that were setting on his bed. Adam ran in and tackled John. “Got ya Big B” Adam yelled! Big B was Adams nickname for John since John didn’t exactly roll off a toddlers tongue but BB did which turned in to Big B.
“John has your dad called to say what time he would be home?”
John sat up on Adam’s bed looking around for him. “No he hasn’t called yet.” John said with a bit of hesitation.
John got up, sat the shoes back on the bed and walked back in to the hallway closing the door behind him.
John was 10 when Adam was born and was pretty much good at everything he did. He played sports year round and was a straight “A” student in school. After Adam was born John was also a great big brother and did exactly what his parents wanted him to do and that was teach Adam right from wrong and he was there for Adam when he needed to be.
