Does a lack of a religious foundation diminish ethics?

Today, it seems we are seeing more and more diminished ethics in our society, at least in my opinion. Without the concept of a supreme or divine power in control and interested in our behavior, human beings might not always make prudent choices with regard to ethics or human decency.

No "Maker", no consequence?
-What if there is no Maker to answer to, no Almighty Judge?

-Any flaws we may have will be answerable only while we live, here on earth. If we can get away with something here and now, what is to stop us, other than earthly laws?
-Why should I turn the other cheek, and not seek revenge?

Some evidence now:
Are these some of the attitudes we are seeing more of today? Are our children seeing the same things? Won't they grow up a little numb to the things our society has come to allow?
Isn't that how we've even come to where we are now?
And so it seems to go.

Does religion help maintain ethics?
I believe it does, and I believe we're seeing proof of that today (though more like a lack of religion resulting in ethics decline).
-Why has society has come to accept lying by politicians, advertisers, etc.?
-Why has society come to accept glorifying of violence, killing and other evils in video games, TV shows and movies?
-Why has society come to accept Corporate greed?
-Why is society so hung up on the money and material possesions?
-Why has society come to accept wars without sound, solid purpose?

This is just my humble opinion, but I believe it will only get worse, until mankind sinks so low that we may finally understand the only way to survive and get along is through the kind of Love that allows us all to be here in the first place!

I believe that our soul or spirit lives on, once we have come to the end of this journey. I also believe there is a Heaven and Hell, although they may be different than some of the pictures we've all seen; more likely places we cannot possibly comprehend with our current knowledge and feeble human minds.

I also believe that what we do here, how we treat others, how we act and interact with others is of paramount importance regarding how we'll spend the next step of our journey in one of those eternal places.
May God bless us all!
