To get the best looking garden, it is best to pick a variety of plants that compliment each other as well as a selection that put on a colorful show for several weeks at a time. For the best looking garden, you have to know how to choose plants that enhance the entire yard.

There are homes whose garden and landscape is perfectly blended with all of the right blooms and plants. Placement of the flowers, trees and shrubs help to balance the height of the house with the ground. Well thought out flowers in the garden can brings the finishing touch that make your home and garden look its best. The first rule is to make sure plant placement does not allow any plant to over power the other plants. Go from short to medium, to tall so that all of the plants get a chance to be seen and appreciated.

Flowers for the garden come in many styles and varieties. Here is a short list of the types of flowers to look for.

* Ground Covers - These are the shortest plants that are grown around the edge. Some varieties grow very fast and choke the life out of other plants in the garden.

* Annuals - These are the least expensive plants with blooms lasting for several months. Annuals add vivid colors but the entire plant has to be replaced every year.

* Perennials - Expect these to be more expensive than annuals. These plants produce bright colorful flowers for many years.

Plants have different needs and some require more attention than others. Many plants and flowers need to be trimmed and rose bushes have to be pruned before they produce adequate blooms. There are several types of gardens that require their own particular plants. Conventional gardens can be decorated with a variety of plants, shrubs and flowers.

* Water Garden - Some of the most popular plants are the water lily and lotus plants. The bigger the container used for the plants, the larger the leaves and flowers will become. Add plants that are able to grow underwater. This will help to reduce algae and other impurities.  

* Rock Garden - Rock garden need low lying creeping plants because of the sloped, rocky terrain. These include vines and flowering climbers. Creeping baby's breath is ideal for a rock garden, with its small flowers, as well as the dwarf iris.
