Always deal in cash when you're in this situation, wherever possible. Not only is cash real, handing cash over instead of a debit or credit card makes you more aware of what you are spending.
When I was low on money, and lived day by day, I found it easier to bear by almost turning it into some kind of game. Not to belittle the situation - believe me I know what it's like - but mentally it's a little easier to go shopping and turn it into a challenge. For example, just how far can you make $5 go when you're buying food?
It's easier to do when you buy ingredients rather than pre-packed food. Think of pasta, rice, and those kinds of dishes. Many supermarkets do value ranges now that make it a lot easier to get more for your cash.
Other kinds of shopping are the same. Spend some time looking round for the best deals. It's a real challenge, and it feels like a success when you manage to get something you need cheaper than you thought you would.
Take the opportunity to avoid paying for public transport and walk everywhere instead. Not only does it save money, you'll get fit without having to pay for a gym membership.
I used to try and save a little each week as well whenever I could - even if it was only 2. The mental success was far more important than the physical act of saving even a small amount. I felt like I'd won a small battle.
