One of the biggest thrills of life is the first taste of freedom that college provides. College is a time for learning - not just in the classroom but in life as well. If you are leaving for college in the fall, get your experience started the right way. Follow a few tried and true tips to ensure your first year is a success.
-Introduce yourself.
It sounds simple. Just remember that knowing your roommate is not enough. The best time to meet people is when everyone is just arriving at school. People have not made connections yet, and it is your best opportunity to create a social circle.
-Find the library.
Find all of the important places on campus and go to them. Map out your routes and decide the best ways to get to and from your classes before the first day of school. Go to the library and get comfortable there. You will need it in the future for research or a quiet place to study.
-Get involved.
College provides a world of new opportunities. Follow your interests and investigate what your school offers. It is a great way to meet people, keep yourself grounded, and begin building a resume.
-Do not hide from your professors.
Get brave and talk to your professors after class. Get to know them and show that you are interested in succeeding. Do not be tempted to fade into the background. It is easy to do, and will not serve you very well if you find that you need help in the future.
-Seek out your academic advisor.
Your advisor is there to help you do what you need to do to graduate in four years. He or she is a valuable resource in helping you decide which classes you should be taking, whether you should change your major, and even which professors have the best reputations. Make contact with your advisor and keep him or her on speed dial.
-Go to parties.
Yes, it is okay to go to parties as long as you maintain a balance between studying and partying. Remember that college is about having fun too.
-Keep in touch with your family.
They are your support system. They will also help you remember that you are not quite a responsible adult yet, which will keep you grounded.
College is a wonderful time. Enjoy every moment, make friends you will never forget, and gain memories that will last a lifetime. Good luck, entering freshmen!
