Reflections: Giving birth

by Leigh Sanders

Created on: July 07, 2010

As I drove to my prenatal check-up at the beginning of my 37th week, I thought about the little boy I was soon going to be bringing in to the world.  My first child!  I was pure bottled excitement and anticipation, and had been since Week 8, which is when I first found out I was pregnant.  The very second I saw the plus sign on the test, I knew I would be having a little boy.  I think little girls are adorable and would love to have a daughter some day, but something in me just knew that this first baby would be a son.

My check-up went beautifully.  My little Brandon was positioned head-down as he should have been, and all signs pointed to him coming to the world on schedule.  Only three weeks to go, I thought!  Three weeks until I get to hold my precious child in my arms.  Until I get to see his face, and kiss his little cheeks.  Oh, how was I ever going to make it through those three weeks?  Well, as it would turn out, I wouldn't have to wait that long at all.

The day after my prenatal appointment, my boyfriend and I went to the big city to have a little afternoon of fun.  Do a little shopping, catch a movie, and enjoy each others' company.  As a wildland firefighter, we both knew that each moment he could spend with us was extra special.  When we got to the city, our first stop was at a little sporting goods store so he could get new grips for his dirt bike.  It'd been so long since we'd gotten to ride together!  We were getting the new grips in celebration of our being able to ride again in a months' time.  By the time we made it to the store, however, I was tired and so I waited in the car.  Though my eyes and abs were hurting, I didn't think it was anything a ten-minute cat nap couldn't fix.  So, as he went in to the store, I reclined my seat and closed my eyes.

When my guy got back to the car, I sat up the car and suddenly felt that urge to go to the restroom.  As any woman who has been or is pregnant, when you feel that urge, you do NOT ignore it or put it off!  I immediately hauled my great belly out of the car, and as soon as I stood up straight, I felt a small gush escape.  Oh dear, I thought, I've just wet my pants.  How embarrassing!  I turned to get back in to the car and hide, and another gush escaped.  Straightening, I thought, Well this is odd.  Each time I moved there was another gush, until my pants were completely
