How to choose a furnace filter

If you have a new furnace and you are about to change the filter for the first time, you might be wondering how to choose a furnace filter. There are many different varieties that you can choose from when purchasing a furnace air filter. You can get ones that are disposable and need to be changed every 3 to 6 months or you can get a washable furnace filter that you can use over and over again for years.

Some furnaces have filters that have to be bought from the furnace company. You will need to check on this when you purchase your furnace. If the air filters have to be bought directly from the company, you should make sure that there is a local place where you can buy them so that you don't spend extra time and money ordering them online.

Washable air filters are a good option for those who often forget to buy new air filters or forget to change their air filter on a regular basis. If the furnace is not working properly because of a clogged air filter, then you can simply take out the filter and wash it instead of having to go to the store to buy a new one.

Disposable air filters are great for those who like to make sure that their air filter is clean and ready at all times. These filters can last anywhere from 3 to 6 months, so you will need to check the package when you purchase them to find out how long you can wait before installing a new one. It's always a good idea to buy a package of filters so that you will have an extra on hand whenever you need one.

Some air filters are constructed so that they have several layers. This is so that the filter can hold prevent a different type of contamination. This also give the filter a more rugged structure so that it holds up a little better to wear and tear. Dirt from the air is trapped in the middle filter so that it remains far away from the vent.

If you keep these things in mind when you are looking for the perfect air filter, you should be able to find the one that is right for you. Remember to check the specifications of your furnace and write down the correct size before you go shopping and you should have no problem finding a furnace filter that will fit.
