Essays: Saying goodbye

Our sun has a flamboyant way of saying goodbye. In the final leg of her extraterrestrial journey she is a true specimen of majestic splendor and absolute magnificence. Indeed, what is lost in intensity is gained in soft but halo-like radiance. The grandeur of this spectacular showcase is open to all audiences. No subscription fee is solicited; but if endowed with an aesthetic sense one has little more to do than to feast his eyes on the Western horizon on a late afternoon. By now, the ocean's shimmering glassy road is an invitation to ride into the sunset. The sun, now a bright yellow disc stands poised against the picturesque backdrop of an adjacent sky. The sun, sea and sky are now in symbiotic agreement; a graphic display of cosmic unity and glory worth replicating. Then as this awe-inspiring, simmering, heavenly giant descends, its surrounding hues change gradually from orange to blue, then gray, while low lying clouds continue to reflect its ebbing rays even after it vanishes.
