Poetry: Good and evil

by Caroline Garlick

Created on: July 05, 2010

The man works hard for reasonable pay

And gives change to the homeless as he passes their way

He washes his car,  does next-door's for free

Well-known and well-liked, a pillar of community

But behind a closed door, by drunken demand

A wife knows a different side - the back of hand

He'll always save face because he knows he can

Society's branded him; and he's a good man.

The girl has spent time at her Majesty's pleasure

For her light-fingered lifting of another's treasure

She's drunk and disorderly, she's in the wrong crowd

Everyone knows her, obnoxious and loud

But behind a closed door, she cries in her sleep

For the childhood lost to the secrets she keeps

No-one will know the suffering she's incurred

Society's branded her; and she's a bad girl.

Throw around words like wrong and right

Good and evil, black and white

But please don't forget that shade of grey

We all reside there, but still we convey

Prejudice and judgement on everyone else

Turn inwards a moment; and look at yourself.
