The Pebble Beach Golf Course, located on the Monterey Penninsula in California, has rapidly ascended to its current legendary status since its creation in February 22, 1919 by Jack Neville and Douglas Grant. Golfers all around the world make the trip annually to play on this luxurious course, and with good reason.
The course hugs the rugged coastline of the majestic Pacific Ocean and offers holes with open views of the waving waters. In laying out the course, Jack Neville attempted to bring as many holes to the rocky coastline as possible. This layout of the course complements its location and ensures the course's profile as one of the most aesthetically pleasing courses available to the public.
Almost every course has a notorious, treacherous hole which stumbles the players most, but it would be hard to pick out just one for the Pebble Beach course because it's proximity to the coastline portrays some unique, and dangerous hazards on every hole. It is precisely because of this picturesque beautiful nature and challenging holes that Pebble Beach is so widely loved by those who golf there.
In 2001 it became the first public course (i.e., open to the general public for play) to be selected as the No.1 Golf Course in America by Golf Digest.
Pebble Beach Golf Links has hosted the U.S. Open five times, with the most recent held event in 2010. It has a tremendously distinguished set of Open Champions including Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, and Tom Kite. It was also the venue of the 1977 PGA Championship, which was won by Lanny Wadkins in a sudden-death playoff, the first time the format was used in a major championship.
Other high profile championships have been staged on the course including The AT&T Pebble Beach National (held annually) and several U.S. Amateur Championships. The First Tee Open is also another tournament held at Pebble Beach each Labor Day weekend. From PGA Championships to Amateur events this course is prestigious and respected by all golfers.
Strange for a top course in America, is the fact that Pebble Beach is open to the public. This allows an ordinary golfers to walk where greats like Tiger woods, and Jack Nicklaus once walked. This comes at a step price though. For around $495 dollars a round, you can golf at one of the most scenic and prestigious, but also expensive courses in the world.
This course's history, high profile tournaments and events, beautiful nature, and challenging holes. Combine that with the fact that anyone can play where the legends of the game struggle and you get overwhelming evidence that Pebble Beach is one of the top golf courses in the United States, and the world.
