English the official language?
All who participate in the honor of sharing America must acknowledge that America is in fact the nation of one culture, one language. I find this type of patriotism a meaningless effort to define a citizen of this nation. The love for America has been expressed in many languages and cultures since its birth and has not required translation into English to show true patriotism. I believe in unity, that we should all stand together as one, setting aside those obstacles that make a distinction among us and be united under the same liberty without exception.
The declaration of English being the official language in fact would divide the nation by giving preference to one particular group. I believe most immigrants are more then willing to accept English as the primary language. such legislation would serve no purpose other than to suggest one race being inferior to another.
America is a nation of variety which include culture, religion, language and color. We must all understand that regardless of our differences, our love for our country is identical. This is the reason our jealousy is enraged, when one is given preference over the other. All of us who are parents and been gifted with more then one child, are aware of the consequences that arise when a child feels inferior to another. They both demand equal recognition, same rights and privileges with no excuse.
Some may imply that I have diverted from the subject, but I must emphasize and bring to rest my true feeling regarding this topic, being of Apache Indian descent, I had first hand experience in the official language of America: the year was 1957, as a child I was subject to the cruelty of my tutors who were determined to make me proficient in the English language on the first day of school. I was instructed that under no circumstances Spanish would be tolerated. Being fearful of corporal punishment I would remain silent, and shameful of my heritage.
With all due respect to the founding fathers, and the majority of the citizens of the nation, English should remain the primary language of this country and all their traditions held with honor without debate. Perhaps some day in the future we can all become one, and all of us can be regarded as the children of America, and honor all of our traditions, regardless of our heritage.
